Brody CondonMay 4-June 1, 2012
Brody Condon’s Cube is a looped video burst documenting a
hand maneuvering an polychromatic lacquered Plexiglas cube projected within
the cube of Gallerykit.
Turned this way and that you might immediately think of a geek showing off with
a single-hand Rubic’s cube solution. However, we tend to interpret Cube as a cross
between Clive Barker’s Hellraiser
torture themed Cenobite ‘puzzle boxes’ and Clement Greenberg’s
significantly more sadistic fetish for Color-Field painters. Why not “Come and See” the colorful
apocalypse for yourself? Hopefully
Hellraiser’s
Pinhead doesn’t show up too.
Brody Condon graduated with an MFA from the University of
California San Diego and attended residencies at the Skowhegan School of
Painting and Sculpture and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. Condon
recently presented work at On Stellar Rays, New York, 2012, the Albright-Knox
Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, 2011; Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, NY, 2011;
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, 2010; Greater New York at
MoMA/PS1, Queens, NY, 2010; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, LA, 2010; Museum of
Modern Art, New York, NY, 2009; Sonsbeek International Public Sculpture
Exhibition, The Netherlands, 2008; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The
Netherlands, 2008; and the Whitney Biennial at The Whitney Museum of American
Art, New York, NY, 2004. An exhibition of Condon’s work will be hosted by the
Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT in 2012. He lives and works
between Berlin and New York.
